Signs and Symptoms of Dandruff September 14, 2010

The prominent sign of dandruff is the presence of white flakes on the scalp and in the hair. It is also called as seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. In case the person is wearing dark clothes, it is easy to notice the flakes when they fall on their shoulders. The scalp may feel sore, tight, and itchy. The adult individuals that have seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp may experience red, greasy and flakes patches of skin.

Signs and Symptoms of Dandruff

Some of the common signs and symptoms of Dandruff are as follows –

Presence of while flakes of skin on the scalp as well as in the hair of the person

Presence of oily looking flakes

Scalp may feel tight and itchy

Head may feel sore and tingly

Red, flaky, and greasy patches of skin

Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp in adults

Scaling rash on scalp

Majority of the cases of dandruff are not severe and you need not visit the doctor immediately. However, if you experience severe itchiness and feel like scratching the scalp, then it may lead to redness and swelling of scalp and you should go to see a doctor after few weeks of self-treatment. At times, the person may experience severe form of dandruff known as seborrheic dermatitis and that needs to be treated with proper care and attention

The signs and symptoms of dandruff in babies and children are referred to as cradle cap. It may occur in when the child is between 2 weeks and 6 months of age. It is more prominent between the ages of 3 to 8 weeks. It may quickly disappear after a few weeks and it can take months in few cases. The cradle cap is not dangerous however it may leave the parents worried for their child.
